Guitar

My teaching is student centered and my intention is to empower the student and to awaken or develop their own interest in playing guitar. I enjoy playing and teaching both electric and acoustic guitars and at my home studio, students have the opportunity to try out a variety of instruments – besides the guitars, the studio is equipped with an electric keyboard, drum kit and bass guitar. This is usually an inspiring atmosphere for students. It also increases awareness of the relationship of the various instruments and they can learn about the similarities and differences between them. I often accompany students and we take turns learning and playing both the melody and rhythm of songs. This method is weaved into every lesson from the very beginning. Students get used to playing music with another person – first their teacher, but later by joining a guitar ensemble or band if they choose. This strengthens the student’s musicality and sense of rhythm as they have to be very aware of the tempo and the other player(s) at all times.

My own areas of interest are also my strengths; classical style/fingerpicking, rock and rhythmic playing are more deeply explored depending on the student’s areas of interest. I use method books, but supplement with leveled packets, each containing songs selected to help the student learn notation and navigate the fretboard.

Mia playing Romance de Espana, a piece I use to introduce classical fingerpicking to students interested in learning that technique.
